Wei Qi and Seasonal Allergies

In TCM, the Wei Qi is our body’s outer most protective energy. It circulates on the surface of our skin and into the lungs. It acts as a protective layer, defending our body from external pathogens like wind and cold.

When our Wei Qi is strong, our body can effectively fight off allergens without overreacting. However, if Wei Qi becomes weak or imbalanced, our bodies become more reactive to seasonal allergens. Our Lungs govern Wei Qi and the skin. Acupuncture is a great modality to help strengthen our Lung Qi and thus improving our body’s defence against allergens.

Foods to help strengthen the Lungs and overall immunity:

  • Warm, cooked foods: Avoiding excessive cold or raw foods as they can weaken our digestive system
  • Ginger and Garlic: helps expel external pathogens, warm the body and improve circulation
  • Goji Berries: help nourish the blood to boost immunity
  • Asian pears: helps moisten the lungs and sooth a dry cough
  • Radishes and Daikon: helps clear phlegm and detoxify the body
  • Barley tea: helps drain dampness to prevent mucus build up

Foods to avoid:

  • Cold, raw, iced foods and drinks can weaken digestion and qi production
  • Dairy products can increase mucus production
  • Processed or fried foods: increase dampness and weaken immunity
